SAILING ROUTE
Helsinki-Käsmu-Naissaari-Tallinn
We sailed from Helsinki through the eastern archipelago of the Gulf of Finland to the Estonian side, to the captains' village of Käsmu. The village's history dates back to the 15th century, when it had a maritime school, and almost every family had someone who had attended the school. At its peak, almost 90% of the Estonian merchant fleet was registered in Käsmu, and it was a much better-known maritime city in the world than, for example, Tallinn.

From Käsmu, Svanhild's journey continues westwards, along the Estonian coast and if possible, we will also stop at other coastal destinations, such as Hara, which served as a submarine base during the Soviet era.

Before arriving in Tallinn, we will dock at the port of Naissaari. The history of Naissaari stretches back hundreds of years and it was inhabited by fishermen, farmers and sailors. It is also known that there were once Viking shelters there. The first fortifications on the island were built by the Swedes during the Great Northern War and throughout the Soviet era Naissaari was a closed military island and there was, among other things, a naval mine depot and a missile base. The island was opened to tourists in 1994 and today it is a scenic tourist destination.
